Onna Onna (Onna is the Japanese word for ‘woman’) is a subsidiary of Aegon and a new player on the insurance market. They distinguish themselves by offering insurances at a signficant lower rate for women. This might seem like positive discrimination but nothing is more besides the truth.
The first remarkable thing about Onna Onna is the representation of their mascots Onna & Onna. These cute, clear line drawings originate from the creative brain of the renowned contemporary British artist William Broome.
Broome studied Fashion Design at St Martins School of Art in London, but eventually found his passion in ‘drawing on things’ . He kept his connection to the fashion industry by designing for Mark Jacobs, Gucci, Missoni, Hugo Boss and Vans. But also more conservative brands like Wedgewood invited him to spice up one of their dinner services with his clear line drawings, on the occasion of their 250th anniversary
From July 6th until July 27th Onna & Onna, as well as other creations of Broome, are exhibited at the LaRaven Gallery in Amsterdam.
When the nature of this artist’s work is considered, it’s quiet obvious why Onna Onna choose the imagery of Broome to become part of their corporate identity.
Where the Insurance Market has a tendency of being rigid and directed by traditional values, Onna Onna dares to be different in offering insurances that are especially appealing to women. Not to be disadvantageous to the other sex, but just by applying common sense to the female virtues.
For instance their car insurance is available for women at very low rates, based on the simple fact that women drive more safely and causes less accidents (sorry guys, it has been proven scientifically multiple times) . This car insurance also covers the theft of her purse when it’s stolen from her car and offers swift assistance in case of her car breaking down (very helpful, especially when this happens on an unlit, deserted highway in the middle of the night).
Besides car insurance Onna Onna has worked with insurance partner Agis to develop a health insurance for women as well, attending to her special needs such as birth control and day care for children in case of hospitalization.
The development of services specifically for certain population groups does not mean people are being singled out. It does not interfere with our organizations’ quest for World Acceptance of All People, so to speak. It merely shows involvement to the social diversity of society and testifies to the special needs of certain groups. So basically, acknowledging this diversity means a true act of acceptance.
